Overview

HU Kitchen is a food brand with a Shopify storefront. Over about a year, from late 2022 into late 2023, I helped build and refine that storefront as a Software Engineer at The Beyond Group.

What I built

  • Product pages with flavor and size selectors, a gallery that follows the selected option, badges, and a nutrition drawer.
  • Homepage and collection layouts, including a product collage, sliders, and collection showcases.
  • A side cart with upsells, free shipping messaging, and a styled empty state, plus analytics events for upsell interactions.
  • A newsletter signup component, a cookie consent integration, and styling for the product reviews widget.
  • Worked through an accessibility audit: meaningful alt text, labels on icon links, real buttons in place of links styled as buttons, and correct tab and accordion semantics.

Technical challenges

One theme, many page types

Product, collection, and home pages share components, so each change had to hold up across layouts and screen sizes.

Upsells without clutter

Cart upsells had to help without crowding the cart, so I limited what they show, avoided duplicates, and kept them clear of the line items.

Accessibility fixes that last

An audit produces many small findings across many templates. I used real buttons and links, meaningful alt text, and correct ARIA states so the fixes work for keyboard and screen reader users.
